چکیده

The combination of an angiotensin II type 1 receptor blocker (valsartan) and a thiazide diuretic (hydrochlorothiazide) has been evaluated in the treatment of patients with hypertension in several clinical trials. The valsartan/hydrochlorothiazide (VAL-HCT) combination was found to be generally more effective than either drug given alone. The incidence of adverse events in VAL-HCT recipients was not significantly different than in placebo recipients. Valsartan attenuated the hydrochlorothiazide-associated decrease in serum potassium concentrations. In this report, a 73-year old female patient, who after using VAL-HCT comGunduz-vol4,no3 1/10/70 7:57 PM Page 476

Severe Hyponatremia Associated with the Use of Angiotensin II Receptor Blocker/thiazide Combinations

There are several widely used combinations of angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB)/thiazide. The complimentary mechanism of action for such anti-hypertensive therapies is that, while ARB inhibits the vasoconstricting and aldosterone-secreting effects of angiotensin II, hydrochlorothiazide affects the renal tubular mechanisms of electrolyte reabsorption and increases excretion of sodium and chl...

Combination therapy of angiotensin II receptor blocker and thiazide produces severe hyponatremia in elderly hypertensive subjects.

Thiazide diuretics are known to produce severe hyponatremia as well as hypokalemia. The present study demonstrated severe hyponatremia in three hypertensive patients who had received combination therapy consisting of an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) and thiazide. The serum sodium (Na) levels in all three cases were markedly reduced to below 116 mmol/L, and the patients exhibited augment...

Maximising antihypertensive effects of angiotensin II receptor blockers with thiazide diuretic combination therapy: focus on irbesartan/hydrochlorothiazide

BACKGROUND Evidence-based guidelines for the management of hypertension are now well established. Studies have shown that more than 60% of patients with hypertension will require two or more drugs to achieve current treatment targets. DISCUSSION Combination therapy is recommended as first-line treatment by the JNC-7 guidelines for patients with a blood pressure > 20 mmHg above the systolic go...

Angiotensin II type 1 receptor blocker losartan attenuates locomotor, anxiety-like behavior and passive avoidance learning deficits in a sub-chronic stress model

Objective(s): Stress alters sensory and cognitive function in humans and animals. Angiotensin (AT) receptors have demonstrated well-established interactions in sets of physiological phenomena. AT1 receptors can play a part in stress-induced activation of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis; besides angiotensinergic neurotransmission plays a pivotal role in stress-evoked physiological resp...

[Effects of the combination of angiotensin receptor blockers and thiazide diuretics on laboratory values (levels of serum potassium, sodium, and uric acid)].

The combination of angiotensin receptor blockers (ARB) and a thiazide diuretic (hereafter, ARB/diuretic) is expected to improve patient adherence and increase the therapeutic effects because of the lower number of pills that require to be administered. In addition, an ARB/diuretic combination alleviates hypokalemia that frequently develops in patients receiving thiazide diuretics. In this study...
